Essential Functions:

The RN ThriveKids assists the hospital in improving healthcare and academic outcomes for students by providing services such as staffing schools with healthcare professionals and providing/facilitating direct patient care services for students while at school. Works as an outpatient nurse assigned to a school campus and is responsible for all student healthcare at such school. Accountable for responsibilities such as daily clinical oversight for all students, training/delegating other school staff members, developing student care plans and serving as a health liaison between stakeholders. With access to the hospital's specialty services, supplements and resources the student health needs. Involved in career development at the hospital or may work for summer school nursing programs or other outpatient clinic needs across the hospital when the school year is not in session.

Job Qualifications:

GENERAL DUTIES

Performs Daily Clinical Skills/Oversight:

  • Serves as a health resource person to all school staff and students.
  • Maintains complete health records on all school nursing activities.
  • Establishes a weekly routine of visits to schools.
  • Triaging students as needed daily. Provides health assessments for students who are ill or injured while at school. Follows-up on all students with suspected health problems
  • Manages medication and leverages resources made available through the hospital.

Trains Staff and Delegates Responsibilities:

  • Conducts training on non-complex medical procedures/medication administration and delegates to school staff as necessary to meet students' needs.
  • Serves as the medical authority/resource for any delegated responsibilities.

Student Care Plans Development:

  • Reviews the health and developmental history on all appropriate students, develops an Individual Health Plan (IHP) or Nursing Care Plan, notifies staff of any health needs and implements appropriate accommodations when needed.
  • Develops emergency care and transportation plans.

Conducts Screenings, Education and Referrals:

  • Conducts vision, hearing, scoliosis and other screenings on students in designated grade levels as required by the state department of education, records on student's health record and refers to proper resources as needed.
  • Provides instruction for self-exam to high school females as mandated by the state department of education.
  • Provides counseling to pregnant students on a routine basis in accordance with local school board policy.
  • Provides at least one health-related educational event for students per semester
  • Performs immunization review, linking and referrals. Assists in checking immunization records on grades as required by the State Department of Health and the State Department of Education.

Serves as Health Resource Liaison:

  • Conducts Health Conferences for students with special health needs and processes appropriate paperwork from the licensed prescriber, parent for health procedures and medications ordered during the school day.
  • Conducts parent health conferences as needed.
  • Attends Individual Education Plan (IEP) work groups for eligible students.

Performs All Other Duties as Assigned by the School District Leadership and Hospital:

  • Works in the school medication office and navigates school-based virtual care resources for in-school student care.
  • If works beyond the academic school year will provide clinical nursing services for hospital outpatient clinics.

Basic Life Support Health Care Provider American Heart Association

Registered Nursing License Louisiana State Board of Nursing

Clinical knowledge of pediatrics.

Ability to write clinical case notes following standard practice language and procedures.

Strong communication skills in multiple settings and the ability to be an engaging change agent and culture-creator that can inspire and motivate.

Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to use quantitative and qualitative data to make decisions and recommendations.

Collaborative management style with a proven track record of working with diverse individuals at all levels to drive decision-making and results.
