Description

DEFINITION
Under supervision, the Court Attendant provides courtroom support in selected courtrooms by performing limited security-related and clerical duties, and serving as the court liaison for juries, witnesses, attorneys, and the public.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Court Attendant is an entry-level classification that performs clerical work. This classification differs from the Deputy Clerk series in that it has limited security-related and jury responsibilities. This classification differs from the classification of Courtroom Clerk in that it assists Courtroom Clerks with more routine and less complex clerical duties, and does not have responsibility

Security-Related Support:
1. Conducts thorough searches of the courtroom and surrounding areas prior to morning and afternoon sessions to ensure courtroom security; monitors and observes people and activities during courtroom hours to ensure non-disruptive activity.
2. Promptly reports security violations or suspicious items to Sheriff's Control or other appropriate personnel; utilizes alarm buttons for emergencies.
3. Ensures jurors, spectators, witnesses, and attorneys adhere to courtroom standards by providing guidance on appropriate conduct.
4. Takes immediate action in providing first aid or performing CPR when necessary; contacts the appropriate agency or personnel in the event of a medical emergency.
5. Complies with evacuation plan in the event of an emergency and reports actions to Sheriff's Control.

Liaison:
6. Instructs the jury panel on appropriate courtroom decorum and monitors conformance.
7. Prevents any unauthorized conversation between jurors and involved parties while the case is in trial by observing and monitoring interactions of trial participants.
8. Serves as liaison between attorneys, jurors, witnesses, litigants, and involved parties and the Judicial Officer and their court staff.
9. Directs members of the media and the public to appropriate area or personnel; addresses inquiries from the public, demonstrating courtesy and a service-oriented approach.

Clerical:

10. Locates, retrieves, and assists in organizing materials within files as required for court proceedings.
11. Accepts legal documents for filing under the direction of the Courtroom Clerk; records statistics as required by the department.
12. Performs routine clerical duties such as picking up and distributing mail, scanning documents for court hearings, answering telephones, taking phone messages as needed and processing less complex legal documents.
13. Utilizes office equipment including photocopy machines, personal computers and scanners to assist with courtroom processes as needed.
14. Receives and records payment for bail, fines, fees, trusts, and bonds; issues receipts; processes refunds/overpayments; reviews and balances daily registers and journals; counts and balances daily cash with receipts.
15. Initiates videotelephony software (e.g., Zoom) for remote court appearances, as needed.
16. Assists the public by answering questions regarding courtroom procedures and directions, juror information, or general knowledge of the superior court system.
17. Provides water for the courtroom prior to morning and afternoon sessions convening to meet the needs of the occupants.
18. Regularly inventories and orders supplies to ensure that adequate stock is available for the Judicial Officer, Courtroom Clerk, jury and courtroom operations.
19. Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

 

Either I

Experience: Progressively responsible clerical, legal, security and/or public relations experience.

Or II

Education: Completion of major coursework in a criminal justice, legal, security, public relations or other related field from an accredited college, university, business, or training school.

And

Certification: The ability to obtain and maintain CPR and first aid certification.

Knowledge of:
Clerical and legal record-keeping practices and procedures; standard office procedures for preparing correspondences, reports, and statistical summaries of court activities; English grammar, spelling, and punctuation; basic arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; legal documentation, terminology of court work, and legal process forms; court processes and procedures.

Ability to:
Observe situations and identify when to react and determine appropriate courses of action without supervisor present; communicate effectively orally; remain calm in a demanding and stressful work environment; maintain order of large groups of people; analyze and respond to jury and public requests; manage workload efficiently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines under minimal supervision; comprehend, interpret and follow instructions; establish and maintain positive working relationships with judicial officers, attorneys, co-workers, and the public; use good judgment and interpersonal skills to mediate and diffuse disputes in the courtroom; operate computer, printer, copier, scanner, microfiche, and facsimile machines; type 35 wpm; read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
In order to perform the essential, security-related support duties of this classification, incumbents must be able to: see and distinguish objects across a courtroom (approximately 20 feet); hear and understand conversations when background noise is present; bend, stretch, twist, or reach quickly to respond to medical or other emergency situations; move self from place-to-place quickly to respond to emergency situation sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; lift and move objects weighing up to 25 lbs.; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment, including computer, telephone, calculator, copier, scanner and facsimile.
